Checking a builder's licence in Tasmania
Here, the register holds no history at all. What to look for in any state, and what a licence never tells you, is on the main guide.

The direct search, not the regulator's front page. Opened and confirmed on 26 October 2026.
Tasmania's register is a snapshot rather than a record, and that is the single most important thing to understand before relying on it.
Current holders only
The search displays current licence holders. Historical records are not shown at all — obtaining them means a Right to Information request under the Right to Information Act 2009.
The consequence is specific and easy to miss. A licence that was surrendered last year, or cancelled, leaves no trace in the public search. A builder who appears absent might never have been licensed, or might have held a licence that ended under circumstances you would want to know about, and the register will not distinguish those two for you. Everywhere else on this site, an empty result is at least ambiguous; here it is deliberately silent.
Nor does the search tell you whether somebody has an application in progress. “Applied for” and “holds” look identical from outside, which is to say they both look like nothing.
Read the class
A builder's licence can be limited to a class — Builder — Medium Rise, for instance. The class is part of the answer to whether this person may lawfully do your job, not a footnote to it.
One naming note: the regulator was Consumer, Building and Occupational Services until 1 October 2026 and is now Consumer Affairs Tasmania. Older advice, paperwork and search results still say CBOS.

Questions about Tasmania licences
Where do I check a builder's licence in Tasmania?
The Occupational Licensing portal. It shows current licence holders.
Can I see whether a licence was cancelled or surrendered?
Not from the public search — it holds no history. A licence that ended last year leaves no trace, and obtaining historical records means a Right to Information request.
So what does an empty result mean?
It cannot tell you. Never licensed and formerly licensed look identical in this register, which is unusual — elsewhere an empty result is at least ambiguous rather than silent.
Why does everything still say CBOS?
Consumer, Building and Occupational Services became Consumer Affairs Tasmania on 1 October 2026. Older advice, paperwork and search results have not all caught up.
